The design concept of bicycle saddles has evolved from initially simply providing support to becoming a comprehensive discipline that integrates ergonomics, material science, and cycling science.

 

Core Design Principles: Pressure Distribution and Perineum Pressure Relief
Traditional one-piece saddles often concentrate pressure on the ischial tuberosity area, leading to hip soreness and numbness during prolonged riding.

Modern design concepts emphasize distributing pressure from the sit bones to wider areas, such as the thighs (femur). This has led to two mainstream design approaches:

Split Design: The saddle is divided into two independent parts, allowing it to move naturally with the hip joint and leg pedaling motion, dynamically transferring pressure from the sit bones to the thighs, achieving a more even distribution of force.

Central Pressure Relief Design: A groove or hollow structure is designed in the center of the saddle (corresponding to the rider's perineum area) to directly reduce pressure on soft tissues and sensitive blood vessels and nerves. This is a technology widely adopted by many professional saddle brands today.

Refined Classification by Function and Scenario
Saddle design is no longer "one-size-fits-all" but is highly segmented according to riding posture, bicycle type, and rider physiological characteristics:

Racing/Performance Saddles: Usually narrow, long, and hard. The slender shape reduces thigh inner friction when pedaling at high speed; a hard base provides stable support, preventing energy loss due to saddle deformation, and improves pedaling efficiency.

Fitness/Endurance Saddles: Balance support and comfort, suitable for relatively upright riding postures, commonly seen on gravel bikes, touring bikes, etc.

Comfort Saddles: Wide and soft, providing a large area of soft support, mainly for slow, recreational riding with an emphasis on immediate comfort.

Gender-Specific Design: Designed for the wider pelvis and ischial spacing of women, featuring a wider rear support area and optimized central pressure relief structure.

Short-Nose Design Trend: Removes excessive length at the front of the saddle, further reducing thigh friction during aggressive riding postures and providing space for center-of-gravity adjustment.
